12 Reasons You Shouldn’t Invest in a Supercenter

Before you make the decision to invest in a supercenter, consider these 12 reasons to stay away from Wal-Mart. Not only are these mega-chains a direct threat to your standard of living, but they also cause lower-paying firms to close. This is a recipe for disaster and it's not one you want to invest in. However, there are other, less obvious reasons why investing in a supercenter is a bad idea.

Wal-Mart's multistory approach to building a supercenter

One of the challenges facing the retail giant is how to expand its footprint without sacrificing its impact on local communities. Wal-Mart is experimenting with multistory store designs. In Portland, for example, the supercenter would have two levels of underground parking and no parking above ground level. In White Plains, where Wal-Mart is currently planning a multistory store, two levels of underground parking will be above the retail floor, with six additional levels of parking above it. The company also plans to build an AI for Supercenter Site Selection on a 10-acre site in downtown Honolulu.

As more consumers shop online, Walmart plans to tailor its new stores to their communities. In addition to adding a few more stores, the company plans to build Pickup Towers in its developments, further emphasizing its efforts to reach out to consumers through convenience and e-commerce. This is an example of the multi-story approach to building a supercenter that is different from its traditional model.

In addition to the multiple stories of retail space, Wal-Mart is also considering building a supercenter in the town of Pass Christian, Miss. The store's multistory design would surround a parking lot with apartments and retail stores, hiding the parking lot from sight from the street and ensuring a base for potential shoppers. The concept was first conceived in January of this year, when Wal-Mart officials brainstormed ideas for the new store.

While this multistory approach is not perfect, it is a step in the right direction for Walmart's future. The company is currently planning a dozen stores across the country. In addition to retail space, the store will include food halls, skateboard parks, and other amusements like Pinstripes bowling lanes. And the company has not stopped there. It has plans for several more of these stores, with many more to follow.

One of Wal-Mart's latest supercenters, the El Cajon store, is two stories high and is located in the northeast of San Diego. The first floor features fast sellers such as food, cleaning products, and pet supplies. The second floor houses the destination departments like apparel, electronics, and home decor. They are also accessible from all sides, including the parking garage. Those two floors are designed with the consumer in mind.

Although Walmart's multistory approach to building a new supercenter has its critics, the company's environmental impact is tremendous and can jumpstart the development of green building technologies. In fact, one new supercenter in the United States consumes 850 acres of biologically productive land, which is about the size of Salt Lake City. These are staggering numbers. If we are to build a new Walmart in every county in the United States, it will take a lot of land, which will only increase global warming.

It's a threat to the standard of living

Critics say the Supercenter is a threat to our standard of living. The fact is that grocery and discount retail workers make far less money than those in unionized retail chains. It's also notorious for skimping on health insurance, forcing many workers to rely on Medicaid for healthcare. Plus, it's notoriously resistant to employee union organizing efforts. Yet despite these flaws, many people blame the Supercenter for holding back workers' earnings and living standards.
